§ 10.16.220. Abandoned or stored vehicle.

  • Initial response; whenever an officer observes vehicles which may at some point be defined as abandoned under the State as shown in the Code of Iowa, Chapter 321.89 or in violation of Sections 10.16.140 through 10.16.170 the officer shall:

    (a)

    (1) ..... Chalk or otherwise mark the tires and log the vehicle information on the log sheet;

    (2)

    Affix to the vehicle a warning tag;

    (3)

    Issue a citation if appropriate, for instance a junk vehicle that cannot be immediately driven due to lack of parts needed to make it operate.

    (b)

    After forty-eight hours:

    (1)

    A forty-eight hour ticket is issued;

    (2)

    Log the ticket on the log sheet.

    (c)

    After an additional twenty-four hours:

    (1)

    A second ticket is issued;

    (2)

    Advise dispatch to contact our contracted towing services for a junk or abandoned vehicle.

    (3)

    Request a copy of the current registration information be faxed to the Wilton police department,

    (4)

    Complete a tow sheet and have the wrecker driver sign before the car is removed. The wrecker service will be responsible for the vehicle while the vehicle is in transport to the city of Wilton impound yard. Impounded vehicles shall be picked up from the city of Wilton impound yard. Towing fees shall be collected at the Wilton City Hall during regular business hours.
